What Is Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial roots placed into the jawbones to rehabilitate excessive material loss due to tooth decay, advanced gum disease, trauma, or congenital reasons. They can replace a single missing tooth or multiple missing teeth.

What Materials Are Dental Implants Made From?

The majority of dental implants are made from titanium. Due to their biocompatibility and durability, titanium-based dental implants have been the most preferred material in oral implantology for many years. Titanium materials, similar to those used in orthopedic knee and hip prostheses, are utilized in oral implantology, which is considered a sister discipline to orthopedics.

Additionally, zirconium-based metal-free dental implants are also used in holistic dentistry applications. Zirconium-based dental implants are highly durable and do not rust, making them the most preferred material in holistic dentistry.

Dental Implants In Turkey

In Turkey, experienced oral surgeons use high-quality and A(+) class implants such as Straumann. Dental implant procedures are highly successful, especially in Turkey, where advanced surgeries are frequently performed on patients with insufficient bone volume. In addition to using high-quality implants, a must for successful dental implant treatments, another essential factor is undoubtedly a precise and successful surgical procedure. This is performed in our clinic by experienced and well-equipped doctors.

Which Implant Brands Do We Use In Our Clinic In Turkey?

In our clinic, we use implants produced by two different countries: Switzerland and Germany. The Straumann Group implants we use are Swiss-made. Additionally, we have achieved highly successful results with German-made Bredent implants, which we have been using alongside the Straumann Group implant system for over 15 years. We also offer South Korean-based implants as a more cost-effective alternative if our patients request.

Who Qualifies For Dental Implants?

Any individual who has completed their development and has a tooth deficiency and an indication for tooth extraction is a candidate for an implant, provided there are no medical contraindications. The developmental growth of the candidate’s jawbones must be complete before an implant can be placed. If implants are placed too early, the neighboring hard and soft tissues around the implant may not grow in parallel with development, leading to discrepancies in the relationship between the jaws and in harmony with adjacent tissues. Therefore, once the bone development is complete, the candidate becomes suitable for implant surgery.

From A Medical Perspective, Who Are The Patients For Whom Implant Application Is Unsuitable?

  • Patients with uncontrolled diabetes should be carefully evaluated as implant candidates. There is no rule that says diabetic patients cannot receive implants. It should be remembered that diabetic patients are not abandoned to their fate due to any illness. To provide a more evident example, significant surgeries such as cardiovascular surgery, orthopedic surgeries, and many others can be performed on diabetic patients. The important thing is to keep diabetes under control so that it does not negatively affect the healing process.
  • We determine whether diabetic patients are suitable for implant treatment by looking at their hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels in the blood. The hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) levels indicate the patient’s average blood sugar (glucose) levels over the past three months, and based on these values, our clinical oral surgeons decide whether the patient is suitable for implant surgery.
  • Another essential medical consideration is the patient's use of bisphosphonate drugs to increase bone density. When these drugs are used, implant placement is risky due to the excessive repair mechanism observed in the jawbones, and tooth extraction or prosthesis irritation can pose a risk. In such cases, candidates for implant surgery are evaluated based on their b-CTx levels in the blood. These marker levels in the blood provide expert doctors with an idea of whether the patient is a suitable candidate for oral surgical procedures.
  • Another contraindication for implant surgery is an acute infection, tumor, or metastasis in the implant candidate area. Radiation therapy applied to the head and neck region for tumor treatment poses a separate risk for implant success. Particularly in cases where radiation therapy exceeds 60 grams, there is a risk of radiation-induced bone infection (osteoradionecrosis/ORN). Therefore, we recommend that patients who have received radiation therapy to the head and neck region wait at least 18 months before undergoing implant treatment. Allowing sufficient time after radiation therapy ensures safe implant placement for our patients.

Is There A Guarantee On Dental Implants?

Yes, we provide a lifetime warranty for dental implants. However, we place great importance on patients being mindful of harmful substance consumption for the health of their dental implants. Additionally, periodic and regular professional (doctor) care is one of the essential conditions for ensuring the lifetime use of dental implants. Click to review the warranty policy.

How Long Do I Have To Stay In Turkey?

A period of 4-5 days will be sufficient for the initial surgical procedures. During this time (the first visit), we also complete the temporary prosthetics and send our patients off. In cases where a temporary prosthetic is not applied, a 2-day period is sufficient. The treatment plan involves the surgical procedure on the first day and a follow-up check on the second day. Additionally, if the Bredent implant system is used, a 2-day period is also sufficient for the implant placement and application of a fixed temporary prosthesis.

What Surgeries May Be Required Before Implant Installation?

When there is sufficient bone volume, no additional surgical procedures are required for implant placement. In cases of insufficient bone volume, advanced surgical procedures can be performed to increase the necessary bone amount for implant placement. In some of these procedures, implants can be placed simultaneously (in the same session), while in others, the implant placement can be done 4-6 months after the bone augmentation procedure.

Procedures aimed at increasing bone volume are generally classified as follows:

  • Autogenous block graft application techniques
  • Sinus lifting
  • Bone splitting
  • Guided bone regeneration
