What Is A Root Canal Treatment?

A healthy tooth structure contains a bundle of nerves and vessels called pulp, which provides the tooth vitality. Due to cavities, trauma, advanced gingivitis or different reasons, inflammation and infection may occur in the pulp tissue. Mechanical cleaning of the infected pulp through the root and filling it hermatically from the root tip to the pulpal chamber with biocompatible canal filling materials is called root canal treatment. Root canal treatment is a procedure intended to clean and save teeth from infection. At the same time it is a type of treatment that provides relief from the pain of the patient's infected tooth.

Is A Root Canal Painful?

No. Root canal treatments are painless procedures under local anesthesia. After the treatment there may be mild pain in the form of tenderness for a few days upon touching the treated tooth. The reason for this is the healing process of the root end wound and it is an easily tolerable tenderness.

How is root canal done?

Through the root canals the infected and inflammatory pulp tissue is mechanically removed with canal files. With manual hand tools and rotary root tools, the inner root surface is shaped, enhanced, and prepared to be ready for filling. Inner root tissues are decontaminated, in other words tissues are cleared of bacteria. This procedure can be done with the help of antibacterial solutions as well as laser applications. The bacteria-free root canal surfaces are dried and hermetically filled with special systems. Root canal filling being properly applied to the root end is important for the long-term success of canal treatment.

How long does the procedure take and how many appointments are needed?

In vital teeth, root treatment can be done in a single session. In single session procedures, bleeding from the root end is not expected during the filling of the root. In such conditions the procedure takes two sessions. If there is infection in and around the root, root canal filling is applied. In the second session in this case.

How much does root canal treatment cost in Turkey?

The price ranges between 70 to 150 £. The cost varies depending on the number of roots.

What are the signs that you might need a root canal?

Severe and constant pain. Throbbing toothache reflected in different parts of the face might require canal treatment. This type of pain, which should not be mistaken for superficial short term tenderness pain, mostly comes from the deep tissues of the tooth and patient suffers pain, especially during chewing and percussion (touching).

Extraordinary darkening in tooth color. Color changes like an extreme darkening and turning pink in tooth color compared to other teeth in the mouth can be a sign that the nerve tissue of the tooth is dead. Dead pulp tissue has the potential of creating a source of infection. As a result, in such situations, root canal treatment becomes a necessity.

Swelling. Swelling around the tooth and pain when pressing on the swelling is a symptom of spread tooth infection. Swelling may occur in the cheek as well as in the palate. Pus discharge and acne-like formations. In chronic infections, the pus is discharged by the tissue through acne-like formations. It is possible for disturbing smell and taste to come from this discharge and related tissues. In this case root canal treatment is necessary.

How long does it take to recover from a root canal?

After the canal treatment the pain in the tooth is expected to disappear in less than 1 week under normal conditions. Tenderness-like pain in the root end due to pressure on the tooth decreases from the first days and disappears within 1 week.

What happens if I don't get a root canal?

Canal treatment procedure is actually the last procedure to be done before the tooth extraction. In case of the treatment to save the tooth being neglected, inflammation may spread further, the decay causing the inflammation may advance further and tooth loss may occur as a result. Along with tooth loss, spread inflammation may cause aggressive bone destruction on the bone around the problematic tooth and in case of tooth destruction it may cause further damage to the bone tissue necessary for advanced implant applications. At the same time spread infection and cystic tissue caused by the infection can damage the neighboring teeth as well. Therefore the rehabilitation of the tooth requiring canal treatment should not be delayed.

Will I need a crown after a root canal?

Doctor's decision on crown construction depends on the amount of healthy structures (enamel wall structure) of the tooth. That is, if the remaining healthy tooth structure is sufficient enough to provide filling support, constructing a crown is not necessary. Crown construction is preferred in case of insufficient volume and thickness of supporting tooth walls.

Are there any alternatives to a root canal?

Direct Pulp Capping. In this procedure the uninfected pulp, which is a bit exposed, is filled with a biocompatible filling material. With this application the pulp's recovery is supported and the formation of mineralized tissue barrier is provided.

Pulpotomy. In this procedure, the pulp in the pulpal chamber is removed. In other words the nerve tissue in the roots is left behind. Like in direct capping, a tissue-compatible filling material is put on the pulp root which is left behind.

How do I care for my tooth after the root canal?

Routine oral care must be continued. With regular brushing, using dental floss and mouthwashing, oral care should not be neglected. If there is excessive damage to the tooth structure and the filling is large in volume, it is beneficial not to consume hard food. In case of a fracture, caused by a piece of hard food, of the healthy tooth wall or walls, the possibility of saving the tooth may be in danger depending on the fracture line.
